Saxon Hill

The Flo trail on the Essex School Parcel at Saxon Hill was built in the fall of 2004, and spring of 2005 by volunteers of the Fellowship. This has become an immensely popular trail as it represents a place where new mountain bikers can come and have a great time learning the basics of mountain biking, and experts can also come and let it all hang out on a loop that is fast, swoopy, and characterized by great flow.

Flo is a loop which is about 3 miles long and will take anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hour to ride depending on the skill of the rider. The loop was designed to be ridden in a clockwise direction, but can be ridden in the opposite direction; this is the more challenging option. Flo is rated as an easier intermediate trail, but is also a great place to bring eager new riders, as they can be assured of leaving with a big smile on their face.

Directions to the Trail

Flo is best accessed from the end of Thompson Dr. which is off Allen Martin Dr. in Essex, off of Route 15. Here it is on Google Maps Park at the end of Thompson Dr., or in one of the adjacent industrial parking areas. Ride past the metal gate and up the road. About 1/4 mile from the gate the sand road makes a 90 degree right hand turn. Follow the road through the turn and proceed another 1/4 mile and look for a single track entrance immediately next to a 4-wheel trail on your left. Take the single track for about a 5 minute ride and then cross over the VAST trail to the main entrance to Flo.
